It lies 105 km away from Thessaloniki and 36 km from Polygyros, the capital city of the Prefecture of Chalkidiki. Residents are mainly occupied in the sector of tourism or produce olives, olive oil and honey.<\/p>\n

The name of the town means land of Neakitos; it was a dependency of Xenophon Monastery on Mount Athos as early as 300 AD, at the present-day location of Psalida, just before the crossroads for Marmaras. Itamos was named after the tree of the same name found there. The total protected area is 181,426 stremmas (around 45 acres). The region\u2019s landscape mainly consists of wooded hills and open forests. It is an important habitat for birds of prey. Furthermore, the Dragoudeli forest is home to a population of an endangered deer species. The school was built in 1870 and is a historic listed building. The folklore collection features around 1,500 items, donated by the residents of Nikiti to local philologist Dimitrios Dimaras over the last 20 years. More than 500 items are closely related with archival material, modern photographic and oral documents and narratives on film. It dates back to the first half of the 5th<\/sup> century A.D. It is one of the oldest early Christian churches to be found in the territory of Macedonia. It is a 48m-long, three-aisled timber-roofed basilica. The inscription discovered during the excavations mentions the name of Sophronius, a Bishop of the time, which is why it was named Sophronius Basilica. Some of the most important findings in the church are the inlaid wall artworks in the opus sectile<\/em> technique.
